More knowledge needed in lupus fight
David Henderson knows more about lupus, chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that most doctors - but hopefully not for long.
Henderson, 71, of Mount Lawley, head of the Group of WA Inc lupus and had to embark on a steep learning curve after his own diagnosis in 1993.
Lupus is an incredibly difficult disease to diagnose because its symptoms are characterized as vague and can affect different body parts with various episodes of fatigue and pain.
In short, lupus can manifest itself in different forms with symptoms that often resemble many other things - a cold or the flu, a virus or other complaints.
David Henderson has undergone three years of "flu-like" symptoms before he was finally diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which usually strikes women.
Instead of dwelling on the frustration, Mr. Henderson has decided to tackle the problem with education and communication.
As Group Leader of lupus WA, with its goal of lupus sufferers support, caregivers and families, is to arm the doctors every day with as much information as possible to help diagnose lupus.
"I first noticed more and more flu-like symptoms and in 1993, after three years, it was so bad that I coughed, extremely tired, not eating and not go too far with my GP," recalls he said.
"I had many blood tests and they came back as" non-specific virus. "I went to three specialists and was eventually diagnosed by Professor Bruce Robinson."
Mr. Henderson said that at the time of its activity refrigeration family was suffering because of his illness, he was concerned about his lungs and he and his wife decided to relax with a holiday.
"While we were in Singapore and my ankles exploded when I got home, I was sent to a specialist renal found that my kidneys were failing and my lungs were down."
He was treated with a very high dose of steroids which he said that putting it on the "high life", and armed with a new found vitality he began to rebuild and then sell his business and preparing for retirement .
