Literacy wealth needs nurturing
FIJI has a wealth of untapped literary talent evident in the stories that local children have written and the books they have illustrated.
Permanent Secretary for Information, the National Archives and Library, Sharon Smith-Johns has urged children to stay creative writing and art to improve their individual creativity.
Creative side, she also encouraged parents to establish a culture of reading among their children to improve educational opportunities for their children.
"I urge all parents to encourage your children to spend less time watching television and reading over time from good books. The use of books will empower them to be a proactive rather than passive learning, "Ms Smith-Johns said at the closing celebration of Library Week at the Municipal Library Lautoka on Saturday.
Ms Smith-Johns said Fiji had a unique library of culture with a pervasive sense of community not found elsewhere.
"Last Friday, I visited libraries in Rakiraki, Ba and Tavua and what struck me most was the sense of community. Mothers, babies and children were all using the library not only as a resource for reading, but to socialize."
